Section I: I can remember being in second grade and struggling with reading. I was constantly pulled into small groups with my teacher and sometimes even one on one time. For our reading lessons our teacher normally taught lessons in small groups and our groups were based off our reading level. Well, there was this one day where my teacher was teaching a mini lesson to us during small group. The mini lesson was about phonics but after she explained the concept we got to play a game. I don't remember exactly what the game was but I remember it was a board game where each player was racing to get to the finish line. I want to say that on each turn we had to read out loud the word and if we got it correct we got to move on. This is the only lesson that I can remember from reading but I remember it was so fun because we got to play a board game (I posted an image below that looks similar to the game I got to play).

Section II: I feel like when it comes to lesson planning for literacy, I think it is so important to know each students reading level. By knowing your students reading level it will make it easier to see where you need to start instruction. You will be able to have specific strategies for either small groups of students or individual students. Another important tip would be to pick a theme to stick with for awhile while you are covering a topic. Keeping the same theme will make it easier for students to learn new material because they are only focusing on one area at a time. An additional tip that I have been told when planning for literacy is knowing when you should do a mini lesson or whole group lesson. If too many of the students already know the material then they will not be engaged and will get distracted by other things, causing the students that need that instruction to not be able to focus. These tips I have learned have come from some of the teachers I have been able to observe. I am super excited for this upcoming school year because my cooperating teacher only teachers ELAR so I feel like i'm going to learn so many more tips!
